Have you checked if the message is just indented a bit? If it is in a
string of replies, then press 'n' to go down until the message is
selected and then press '[' to reset the margin.

If I read them via the gmail web interface or mutt then they

This will be related to the lack of ncursesw - if you:

sudo apt-get install libncursesw5-dev rubygems
sudo gem install ncursesw

Then you should get the full range of characters.
