Say you've got 3000 messages labeled, and now you want to change the label without painstakingly loading them all into your view. Maybe you've just finished syncing ten trillion emails from your old mbox sources and realize you didn't plan your label strategy very well... There's been mention of a separate tool to go through the ferret index and strip out deleted items, which a quick skimming of the ferret tutorial suggests may be part of the solution, since you can't modify index documents but you can delete and re-add. />
