I gather from experimentation (rather than documentation) that queries must have
at least one positive clause. A query with a single negative clause is treated
as a positive clause. I don't know of a way to search for “anything”, but
here's an example of a query that almost gets you what you want:
to:me -label:inbox
I expect this is a bug and that `-label:inbox` is intended to work as you
expect.
